(NRCC News) – Now that Republicans have secured control of the US House of Representatives in the coming new Congress, Kevin McCarthy has announced his intentions to restore some integrity to the lower chamber starting with a tradition that hasn’t been observed since 2018, when Democrats took control.
On Jan. 3, 2023, the first day of the 118th congressional session, McCarthy plans to read the entirety of the US Constitution. He made the announcement on Friday in a tweet which explained that House members will read the document into the congressional record.
He also added that this “hasn’t been done in years.”
House Republicans made the annual reading of the Constitution a tradition back in 2011 but it came to an end, presumably, in 2018 when Democrats took control of the House.
On the very first day of the new Republican-led Congress, we will read every single word of the Constitution aloud from the floor of the House—something that hasn't been done in years.

The reading of the Constitution, however, is similar to a Senate tradition in which Senators read aloud President George Washington’s Farewell Address. That tradition dates all the way back to 1896 and is carried out no matter which party is in control of the upper chamber.
McCarthy is set to take the gavel from Nancy Pelosi as the Speaker of the House in January as he has already won the position via an internal GOP contest for the position. He was challenged by Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs but won the majority of support from within the party.
While he has cleared that hurdle, he will still need to be elected Speaker on the House floor which may prove to be more challenging than he anticipates.
The vote for Speaker of the House typically falls along party lines and since the Republicans only have a razor thin majority, he can’t afford any dissidents within the GOP though many have been vocal about their opposition to his appointment.
The GOP will only have the majority with 220 seats, with 218 being the minimum seats required for a majority.
It would only take a handful of Republicans to derail McCarthy’s ambitions to become Speaker of the House.
In the meantime, however, McCarthy is focusing on his goals should he take the leadership position. He has vowed that Republicans will focus on oversight of the Biden regime and has suggested that investigations will be carried out, specifically into the Department of Homeland Security Secretary which could lead to Alejandro Mayorkas’ impeachment.

Rightfully so. The southern border has been nothing short of a catastrophe since Biden took over the White House in 2021. Over 5 million illegal aliens have managed to make their way into the US and the Biden regime continues to turn a blind eye to the chaos.
Republicans in the House have their work cut out for them. The border isn’t the only disaster and/or controversy plaguing the Biden regime. It’s time for Americans to finally see some justice and that there are actually some politicians in Washington DC that are still there for us.
It’s time for the GOP to prove they are the party of the American people.
